Some of our recent Projects.

  • Hurlet Crematorium – 2020

Consolidation of Shallow Mineworkings in the Hurlet Coal to facilitate the construction of an access road to the new Hurlet Crematorium.

Following two phases of ground investigation undertaken under the design and supervision of JWH Ross, we were instructed by the Client, Horizon Cremation, to design, supervise and validate a programme of Drilling and Grouting works to mitigate the risk of belated mineral subsidence undermining the integrity of a new access road, delivering value engineering and efficiencies for the client.. The works were completed within a period of 7 weeks during August/September2022

  • University of Glasgow Learning and Teaching Hub – 2017

JWH Ross were commissioned through their parent company, Fairhurst Group LLP, to provide technical design, supervision and validation in respect to the treatment of shallow mineworkings beneath the site of the proposed Learning and Teaching Hub on University Avenue, Glasgow. The works were designed to artificially consolidate shallow unrecorded mineworkings in the Knightstwood Gas Coal by drilling and grouting. The works were undertaken in the Summer of 2017 and were completed within 5 weeks from commencement.

  • McLean Primary School – 2022

JWH Ross were instructed by our client, Fife Council, to secure a former mine shaft positioned within the playground of McLean Primary School in Dunfermline. The works included grouting of the shaft infill material to a depth of 48 metres and the placement of a steel reinforced concrete cap at rockhead. JWH Ross designed and supervised the mine entry consolidation scheme with the shaft cap design provided by our colleagues within the Fairhurst Civil Engineering department. The treatment design had to overcome the challenges of working within a live school environment ensuring effective consolidation of the shaft without compromising the safety of other school users.

  • Millerhill Phase 2 - 2022

Following extensive phases of previous ground investigation, JWH Ross were commissioned by Mactaggart and Mickel to undertake exploratory drilling to confirm the locations of six old pit shafts at the site of a proposed residential development in Millerhill, Midlothian. The investigation works positively identified four of the shafts while the remaining two positions were disproved by a combination of probe drilling and trial excavations. The four shafts located were subsequently stabilised by means of drilling and pressure injection grouting, followed by installation of a reinforced concrete cap over each shaft, in order to make the features safe. In parallel with the mining works, JWH Ross co-ordinated geo-environmental investigation works in the form of gas monitoring and geo-environmental sampling/testing on behalf of our parent company, Fairhurst.

  • Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy - 2020/2021

Working for Graham Construction of behalf of NHS Fife, and following extensive desk study research, JWH Ross designed and monitored grouting works to consolidate old mine workings in the Lochgelly Splint and Parrot Coals within the grounds of Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy, Fife. After carefully co-ordinated works in conjunction with the main contractor and the NHS, the works were successfully implemented with the placement of 481 tonnes of grout via a grid of 220 treatment boreholes. The grouting works facilitated the construction of a new Orthopaedic Centre at the Hospital.

  • LIDL RDC, Eurocentral – 2017

JWH Ross were commission by Winvic Construction to provide a performance specification and specimen design to undertake drilling and grouting works in three seams of workings beneath the site of a new regional distribution centre. The specimen design was latterly adopted by the drilling and grouting contractor and JWH Ross were retained by Winvic Construction to monitor the works, test and validate on completion. The project required the drilling of over 5000 boreholes to facilitate the injection of grout into the worked seams. Our involvement in the project began at Desk Study stage and assisting the main contractor in their bid for the overarching contract through to the successful completion of the grouting works.
